After retiring from physics, having worked in various capacities from scientist to vice president for companies in Silicon Valley, I began writing for local newspapers and started the short-lived Carquinez Review community journal, which continues on as a nonprofit. You can find my  old columns at CarquinezCounty.com, aka QCounty.com, which is a lot easier to remember. A few years later I decided to enroll at Mills College where I recieved my MFA in fiction. I now teach English at Solano College and for a few semesters in the past I taught astronomy at the College of Alameda.

Our Family

My wife of 35 years is a Family Law Commissioner. Our older son, Lucas, lives in Japan with his wife Kaori. And while our younger son Joseph worked with him for many years, Joe returned to the States in the summer of 2008 to attend Columbia University Law School.  Here we are together in Tokyo in January 2007 during our last evening in Tokyo before my wife and I returned to Benicia.

Kaori & LukeOur older son, Lucas Badtke-Berkow, founded Knee High Media which publishes various magazines, including Paper Sky and Mammoth. His wife and our beautiful and incredibly intelligent daughter-in-law, Kaori Sakauri, used to be the editor of Tokion, the first magazine Luke founded and later sold. Kaori is now in charge of Mammoth.

Mina, Joe and Sanna

Our younger son, Joseph Badtke-Berkow, was a freelance writer and editor in Japan who also taught English before returning to the States to begin law school at Columbia University, where he’s finishing his third year. After graduation, he will be an associate attorney at Allen & Overy. Mina, our beautiful and incredibly intelligent daughter-in-law, is interning at the UN while attending  Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, SIPA. Both Joe and Mina will be graduating in May. Hooray!
