After retiring from physics, having worked in various capacities from scientist to vice president for companies in Silicon Valley, I began writing for local newspapers and started the short-lived Carquinez Review community journal, which continues on as a nonprofit. A few years later I decided to enroll at Mills College where I recieved my MFA in fiction. I now teach English at Solano College and also write once again for The Benicia Herald. You can find my current and old columns at CarquinezCounty.com, aka QCounty.com, which is a lot easier to remember. This semester I’ll also be teaching something new, Astronomy at College of Alameda.

My wife of 33 years is a Family Law Commissioner, and both our boys and their wives live and work in Japan. Here we are together in January during our last evening in Tokyo before my wife and I returned to Benicia.
Our older son, Lucas Badtke-Berkow, founded Knee High Media which publishes various magazines, including Paper Sky and Mammoth. His wife and our beautiful and incredibly intelligent daughter-in-law, Kaori Sakauri, used to be the editor of Tokion, the first magazine Luke founded and later sold. Kaori is now in charge of Mammoth.

Our younger son, Joseph Badtke-Berkow, is a freelance writer and editor who also teaches English and who is studying hard for the LSAT since he plans on returning to the States to study law. His new bride, Mina Maya Genenz, our beautiful and incredibly intelligent daughter-in-law, holds dual Japanese-German citizenship and is completing her masters in American Studies at Bonn University.
